The 2023 Brian Nettleton Lecture

A highlight of the recent Outdoors Victoria 2023 Conference was the Brian Nettleton Lecture, delivered by John Quay, Associate Professor, The University of Melbourne.

The 20 minute lecture was titled:

Living in History: A Challenge for Non-Indigenous Outdoor Education

In his presentation, John sought to explore some of the history of the past 200 years in Gippsland, the country of Gunaikurnai, and revealed how we, non-Indigenous outdoor educators, need to ensure that we learn this history – and feel this history –  to understand as a prelude to inform our teaching.

He also discusses First Nation in Education, the compulsory subject now being taught at the University of Melbourne for all teachers from early childhood through to Secondary teachers.

He points out that there are not enough indigenous people to do all the work in history, story and truth telling which is why need to upskill and do this.
