2022 Outdoor Education Awards — Deadline Extended!

Outdoor Education Australia (OEA) is pleased to announce that entries for the 2022 Australian Outdoor Education Awards are now open, with the addition of a new fifth award recognising young Outdoor Ed Achievement. Entries will be accepted until midnight, Friday 15 July 2022.

The OEA Awards enable the outdoor community to recognise the work of educators and organisations. They provide a shining light on inspiring, transformational and impactful Outdoor Education programs, organisations and educators across Australia. Through this form of professional recognition OEA members are informing the wider public of the values and achievements that are respected by Outdoor Educators.

What are the awards, prizes and criteria?

Outdoor Education Program

Outdoor Education Program

This award is open to schools and organisations who have developed and implemented a high quality outdoor education program.

The winning program will receive a $3000 prize.

Nominators will need to provide a submission of up to 3 pages addressing:

  1. Aims of the program
  2. A description of the program participants
  3. Evidence of the program’s success
  4. An outline of the program that also addresses the following Evaluation Criteria:
A. Innovation Is the program innovative in its design and implementation?
B. Quality Does the program demonstrate the qualities of an effective OE program?
C. Sustainability Is the program able to be continued in to the future?
D. Needs based Does the program identify and address the needs of the participants?
E. Responsible Is the program conducted in a socially and environmentally responsible manner?

Service to Outdoor Education

Service to Outdoor Education

This award recognises the efforts and contribution of an individual or organisation to the advancement of Outdoor Education.

1. Brief resume (relevant professional experience) and qualifications / awards.
2. Contribution to OE, that also addresses the following Evaluation Criteria:

  • Commitment and service to the outdoor education profession which is above and beyond the formal requirements of their employed position.
  • Recognised contribution to the achievements of OEA and/or a member organisation of OEA.

Outdoor Education Practitioner

The recipient of this award will have achieved significant impact on students, participants and or peers through their work as an outdoor education practitioner.

  1. Brief resume including relevant professional experience and qualifications / awards.

B. Impact Is there evidence of their impact on the outcomes of their participants and their peers?
C. Experience Do they have a depth of experience?

Outdoor Education Fellow

Outdoor Education Fellow

Fellowship of Outdoor Education Australia is one of the highest honours that OEA can bestow. It will be seen by the wider outdoor education community as recognition of an exemplary contribution above and beyond any paid professional role. It is made visible by the use of the post-nominal FOEA.

Nominators will need to provide a submission of up to 3 pages including:

  1. Brief resume (relevant professional experience) and qualifications / awards.
  2. How has the nominee met the following criteria:
    • Record of high achievement and of ethical practice sustained over time in fulfilling their professional responsibilities in outdoor education
    • Commitment and service to the outdoor education profession which is above and beyond the formal requirements of their employed position
    • Recognised contribution to the achievements of OEA and/or a member organisation of OEA.

Outdoor Education Emerging Practitioner

Outdoor Education Emerging Practitioner

The recipient of this award will 25 years old or younger and have achieved significant impact on students, participants and or peers through their work as an outdoor education practitioner.

  1. Brief resume including relevant professional experience and qualifications / awards.

B. Impact Is there evidence of their impact on the outcomes of their participants and their peers?

Who can nominate?

Eligibility

(a) Who is eligible to nominate candidates for an OEA Award?

The nominating person must be either:
i. a financial member of an OEA State member organisation;
ii. a student at an educational that is a financial member of an OEA State member organisation; or
iii. a staff member at an organisation that is a financial member of an OEA State member organisation.

People are able to self-nominate for an OEA Award.

(b) Who is eligible to be nominated for an OEA Award?

The nominating person must be either:
1. a financial member of an OEA State member organisation;
2. a student at an educational that is a financial member of an OEA State member organisation; or
3. a staff member at an organisation that is a financial member of an OEA State member organisation.

The Nomination Process

There are 2 steps in the nomination process.

Step 1: Nomination.

Nominators are required to fill in the RELEVANT on-line OEA Award Nomination form downloadable from  this website and upload the nomination entry via PDF upload.

Nomination forms must be completed by the application deadline.

Step 2: Verification.

A verification email will acknowledge the submission of the nomination so that nominators know that their submission has been received.

Judging Process

Each state/territory Outdoor Education organisation will assess their applications. They will submit:

  • 1 nomination for the Outdoor Education Program Award
  • 1 nomination for the Outdoor Education Practitioner Award
  • All suitable nominations for the Outdoor Education Service Award
  • All suitable nominations for the Outdoor Education Fellow Award

The OEA Awards Committee will select:

  • 1 national winner for the Outdoor Education Program Award
  • 1 national winner for the Outdoor Education Practitioner Award
  • All suitable nominations for the Outdoor Education Service Award
  • All suitable nominations for the Outdoor Education Fellow Award

The OEA Awards Committee will consist of the OEA chair (or nominee) and 2 committee members to be appointed by the OEA executive. A state can not have more than 1 person on the Awards committee.

Nomination Deadline and Key Dates

Your nomination can be uploaded to this website and will be forwarded to your state / territory body

Nominations close Friday 24 June 2022.

Each state / territory decides their nominees for each category and forwards nominees to OEA by Friday 8th July 2022.

OEA finalises judging by Friday 22 July 2022.

Winners announced at NOEC 2022.

Finalists posted to this website by 15 October 2022, after winners announced.

Q. Can I submit more than one nomination per category?
A. Yes

Q. How do I know if my nomination has been received?
A. Once you hit the submit button you should receive advice that your nomination has been successfully submitted.

Q. Will I be told if my nomination has been successful?
A. No. However we will likely announce the finalists in the Outdoor Program of the Year Award prior to NOEC 2022.

Q. Can I nominate myself for an award?
A.
Yes, all nominations will be verified by your state organisation and the OEA Awards Committee.
